Where Are You Located?

The Hub Gym is located in Main Street, Broken Arrow, in the rapidly blooming Rose District. Its formal address is 521 N Main St, Broken Arrow, OK 74012. The Hub Gym is located on the northmost edge of the Rose District on the east side, in a corner of shops including Rise Grind & Ride Espresso Café, Zen Tattoo, and Winner Salon. Just across the street from it is Goodyear Tire, another good landmark. Right behind (east of) the gym is a neighborhood of small Broken Arrow homes, and the gym’s south end (south of the parking lot) is neighbored by a cozy little Italian restaurant called Cheri Ann’s Trattoria. Its location at the edge of the district makes it an easy find. Visitors will find it without difficulty if they drive east down 71st street, driving through Garnett, Olive (129th), Aspen (145th), then Elm, and take a right once approaching Main street. There is a Rib Crib on the right, once approaching Main. If someone is driving to the Hub Gym from the west, some landmarks before arriving at Main street are an Aldi and Hyundai (on the north side of 71st street before approaching Aspen), which are soon followed by a Walmart Super Center (on the south corner of the 71st and Aspen intersection), and the large Rhema Bible Center (on the south side of 71st street between Aspen and Elm). Once a visitor drives past Elm’s intersection, they will quickly find Main street (accompanied by Rib Crib on the right), where they will take a right turn. After driving straight down Main, they will pass a brief stint of small houses and soon find the gym to their left, next to a medium-sized parking lot. Alternatively, if visitors come from the east length of 71st street, the big streets they will pass are 225th street, 209th street, and 177th street: after 225th street, drivers will go under the Creek Turnpike overpass, and soon hit 209th street. They will keep driving west, pass the Broken Arrow Expressway (Highway 51), and they will continue through 177th street before arriving at Main Street. At the Main street stoplight, they will take a left. Drivers will then drive straight, pass the homes, and find the Hub gym on the left side of the street. On the right side, along with Goodyear Tire, is Target Marketing and Print and Mail Solutions.

Drivers coming from the south end of the district will enjoy a fun and slow drive through the lively strip, until they reach the end of the district and find the gym to their right. The district is filled with alluring shops and cafes to look at through the windows. A visitor driving north down Main will pass Willowcreek Mansion (an event venue, particularly notable for weddings) and the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center (on the east corner of Houston and Main), which is south of the heart of the Rose District. Continuing north will take them past the following shops, which are several, but not all: the Broken Arrow Museum, Fleet Feet Broken Arrow, Alli Balli Boutique, Bella Vita “Accents for Beautiful Living”, Nouveau Chocolates, Beyond Athletica, Pinot’s Pallete, In the Raw sushi, Glamour Gowns & More, Laurannae Baking Co., Main Street Tavern, Fiesta Mambo! Downtown Mexican Restaurant, The Rooftop, Toast, Franklin’s Pork & Barrel, Andolini’s Pizzeria, 1907 Store, Southern Magnolia, Hollow Tree Gifts, McHuston Booksellers & Irish Bistro, STG Gelateria Broken Arrow, Beauty Box Boutique, My CBD Hub, the Military History Museum, and Scoops and Rolls Creamery. Another highly anticipated business joining the Rose District is Bramble Breakfast & Bar, which has sister locations in the rapidly growing Pearl District of downtown Tulsa, as well as Riverwalk Jenks. The Rose District is surrounded by neighborhoods of beautiful, older vintage homes, with some homes resembling styles from the Victorian era. Nestled in a nearby neighborhood is the Broken Arrow Library, an older but still popular spot.

The Rose District is quickly gaining exposure as Broken Arrow’s historic entertainment district, filled with eateries, shops, and regular event. The growth is due to a successful Downtown Revitalization Plan begun in 2005, with the aim to make the district as successful and alive as it was in its earlier days. It is slowly finding ground to compete with Tulsa’s downtown area. Visitors might feel as if they are stepping back in time, as the district has maintained and renovated its historic buildings, including a train station, a pavilion, and a nearby clocktower. However, new additions have also been funded, including a large interactive water area, beautiful brick sidewalks, newly designed landscaping, pedestrian walking, and elaborate street lamps. Additionally, the street is filled year-round with beautiful soft white lights. It is uncertain if the soft white lights are intentionally kept on year-round, or if they simply have not been removed since Christmastime, but they certainly add a warm and intimate glow to the area come evenings. Near the clocktower, the district holds a regular farmers’ market from April to October at the Rose District Plaza. The market, held on weekends, is consistently filled with regular attendees. The Rose District has seen a surge of small businesses flock to the area, prompting growth and success. Nearby residents have enjoyed seeing the area come alive once more, and they are enjoying the rich entertainment and nightlife it provides. The Hub Gym is a perfect addition to the growing area, and it has already built a strong community of regular members, which include the district’s own businessmen and women. The gym and its environment support the vision of thriving small businesses in Tulsa, and its members recognize its value from its unique atmosphere and its family-oriented, relational employees, which include consistent, driven and committed personal trainers. Other than a nearby CrossFit gym, the Hub is the only gym in the Rose District. It occasionally partners with the Rose District to hold events promoting the gym, and nearby business owners come to support them, contributing to the strong sense of community the district has experienced.

What Is the Atmosphere Like?

The Hub Gym has a uniquely rich and friendly atmosphere, which is attributed to by its ambitious, fun-loving owners and its staff who are focused, eager to succeed, and relationship-driven. The professional staff truly take time to invest in its members and form quality relationships. The team plays a large supporting role in the facility’s goal and success to build a tight-knit, long-lasting and welcoming community. Trainers and gym members at the Hub take fitness and healthy living very seriously, but this does not detract from the playful, high-spirited atmosphere they have created. While some gyms might feel intimidating from the crowd it attracts, the Hub Gym truly reaches all types of people: young, old, beginner or high school athlete, to advanced competing weightlifter. Visitors will see all types of people there; many people have mentioned how comfortable they feel at the gym from the start, even as a beginner. There is no sense of unnecessary competition; they feel welcomed and embraced. That being said, there is still a spacious weight room in the back of the gym dedicated to the “intense” weight lifters. The room includes a deadlift floor, a heavy-duty squat rack, along with some newer equipment that allows for more serious and heavier training. It is a fun and friendly gym, but it is a gym with quality, professional equipment and trainers to facilitate meeting serious goals.
Many members have claimed they will drive across town to the Hub Gym, particularly because of its atmosphere compared to other gyms. Some of the gym’s members live in other parts of town where they have gyms much closer to their residence, but they choose to be a regular member of the Hub and brag about its feel, staff, and members. There are often times where complete strangers soon begin chatting with one another because they see each other regularly. Such regular chatter and fellowship are enhanced when new people will hear folks all around them, chatting with each other in casual conversation. The Hub gym helps hold the community to a high standard of incorporating healthy habits and quality living into a regular lifestyle. It also gives members the chance to be in a more intimate setting, which sets it apart from the overwhelming big-box feel of the larger gym franchises across the city. The small setting alone has won many people over and prompted many invites to new potential members. Word-of-mouth catches on and soon, new visitors are flocking to the gym weekly.
The quality of the staff also adds to the atmosphere. Not only are the staff focused on producing real and lasting results, but they truly love working with their clients and are passionate about investing in people’s lives. Additionally, the trainers bring a diverse set of skills and interests to the Hub table, including an HKC kettlebell certified trainer and trainer who specializes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and self-defense. It is worth noting the dynamic and light-hearted relationships between the staff members themselves. Members will likely hear playful banter and jokes from the staff to one another, which enhances and facilitates such a fun environment; it is evident that people involved in the gym, whether they are members, visitors, or employees, genuinely love the facility and enjoy being a part of it. The Hub Gym also provides a rich atmosphere through its wide variety of classes that appeal to all types of members. Different people with different interests join these classes, and they soon discover how quickly relationships are formed with others sharing similar interests. It is not simply a gym with exercise equipment and trainers. Included are several classes and groups, including the Hub Tribe, which is HIIT (high interval intensity training), but it is designed for all fitness levels and is truly for accountability. Additionally, there are barbell classes, small-group kettlebell training, “couch-to-5K training”, boxing, Zumba classes, the popular “game changers” classes, yoga, boot camps, and more.
There are annual challenges hosted by the Hub, such as a challenge called “Overhaul”, which is in the style of the Biggest Loser weight loss challenge. Another contributing factor to the atmosphere of the Hub is its “First Step” program, where a new and interested member will meet one-on-one with a trainer to be familiarized with all the classes the Hub offers. The trainer will also complete a self-assessment with the client, to know what he or she desires to accomplish. With the trainer’s assistance, they formulate an individualized plan to target the client’s specific goals, and the client is able to form a tangible and realistic plan to reach them, starting that day.
The gym has quickly gained popularity, which allows for it to feel crowded at times. While there are likely plans to expand in the future, current members say they don’t mind it for the time being. It simply makes for a close family feel. There is something to be said about the small local business initiative as well, that people have desired to come behind and support. Broken Arrow is full of people loyal to their city and local business-owners, and people rally behind what the Hub gym has provided for their community. People simply desire to support and facilitate maintaining thriving, locally-owned businesses such as the Hub.
Members also adore the location of the gym, situated in the charming Rose District in Broken Arrow. Members can enjoy all the district has to offer; once they are finished with their workout, training, or class, they can stop by the nearby Rise Grind & Ride Espresso café for a drink or bite to eat, or they may take a drive or walk through the beautiful Rose District, which offers entertainment, cultural experiences, and an exciting nightlife. The gym’s location has grown a community of members that include Rose District business-owners as well because of convenience, which then facilitates a snowball effect of local business supporting local business. The Hub’s atmosphere contributes to its success and continued growth, and its loyal members stand behind it to help continue its legacy as one of the top-rated gyms in Oklahoma.

What Is the Difference Between the Hub and Every Other Gym?

The Hub gym is unlike any other gym in Oklahoma. The Hub Gym has developed a culture focused on real relationships and true and lasting results. There is a fun saying the gym uses, regarding how they genuinely feel about their regulars: “we don’t have members, have ‘friendbers’.” Even though it is a funny saying, it perfectly represents how the facility makes members and new faces feel, and how they will invest in them and their goals. One thing unique about the Hub Gym is their “First Step” program: members will sit down one-on-one with a trainer who will introduce the client to the culture, classes, training, and equipment the facility offers. The trainer will then assess the current needs of the client, and will equip them with the skills and tools necessary to achieve their goals. Some of the classes the gym offers are the Hub Tribe, which is considered “high-interval-intensity-training” (“HIIT”). This particular group is offered early in the mornings (before work for most people), with the aim of holding people accountable to their fitness commitments. Even though is considered “HIIT”, it can easily be catered to all fitness levels, so no one is exempt. The Hub Tribe has been one of the foundational elements of Hub group fitness, and continues to have consistent attendance with great success. Other classes the facility hosts are regular barbell classes, kettlebell training, “couch-to-5K training” (which prepares members for a race held right outside on the eye-catching Rose District), boxing classes, Zumba classes, yoga, bootcamps and more. The facility has also begun “game changers” classes, which have quickly grown in popularity. The “game changers” classes are offered at several times every day (excluding Sunday) and incorporate HIIT as well, but utilize a fun and spontaneous method of various back-to-back exercise segments. Members enjoy the class because no two classes are alike; it makes the class exciting and keeps people on their toes. Often people say the time goes by fast, and they experience moving through the session quite rapidly. They often don’t expect when it is over. This particular class is aimed at pushing people past their comfort zones; an additional bonus the simple fact that being in a class with other people adds the factor of accountability. The desire is to put people in a class that not only encourages them to do better, but help them with their form, help them begin lifting a little bit heavier than what they normally push themselves to do, and also incorporate cardio time. Members who attend have described the class as incredibly high energy at times, with fun and lively instructors, and other times very intense and structured, but members say they feel uplifted and encouraged the entire time. There is strength training, cardiovascular training, resistance, balance, and more. If members are not sure about joining the class, they have the advantage of trying the first full two weeks of classes completely free before committing.
The Hub Gym is in a smaller facility and is locally owned. It is not a franchise chain, and therefore avoids the “big-box” feel of the surrounding, larger gyms. This alone removes a large amount of competition. The size of the facility has created a cozy space that is still dedicated to quality living and healthy habits, and has won over many gym members for its strong sense of community. Part of this is due to the skilled and invested personal trainers, who demonstrate incredible work ethic and consistency with their clients. The trainers at the Hub Gym do not simply create workout plans for their clients, but they aim to develop authentic, personal relationships with each person they train. They desire to learn about their lifestyle, their habits, their interests, and their goals, and walk with them step-by-step on their individualized fitness journey. Hearing people’s testimonials and deep relationships that are formed has caused outsiders to hear about the Hub Gym, and start gaining interest. Another facet of the unique and positive environment is the well-developed relationships between the staff members themselves. It is not uncommon for members to hear staff members joking among one another in good spirit, as well as joke with the members. Playful and fun conversation helps facilitate a light-hearted, high-spirited atmosphere, which further facilitates a positive experience while at the Hub. It is the solid, dynamic relationships that the owners, the staff, members, and visitors alike have and continue to develop that cause people to not just go to a workout, but genuinely look forward to going to the gym.
Another aspect that makes the Hub different from other gyms is finding people of all types, ages, and experience levels throughout the facility. Members and new visitors say they feel so welcome from the first day, and do not experience that common sense of competition or intimidation that can naturally form in a gym environment. There is none of that at the Hub Gym; it simply does not encourage such a mentality. While it is emphasized that everyone at the Hub is treated like family and there is a strong family feel, this does not take away from the intense and relentless commitment people have their fitness goals, which is supported by each staff member and trainer. People at the Hub take their fitness seriously, and are taught proper form from the first time they step foot inside. The light-hearted and playful conversation that is often heard echoing throughout the gym does not take the place of serious work consistently put forth. Members of the Hub are driven, motivated, and stick to their routines. Members of the gym desire to see results, and their qualified trainers know how help produce results time and time again. Proven, lasting results, along with wonderful atmosphere, have made the Hub noticeable to the city: the gym was voted the number one fitness center and athletic center in Broken Arrow over four large nation-wide gym chains, as well as gym of the month on BodyBuilding.com. The environment the Hub Gym has not only created, but successfully maintained, is what sets it apart from its competitors.

What Is the Story of the Founder?

Luke Owens, the owner and founder of The Hub Gym, first had the idea of opening a gym during his years as a young college student. By trade, however, Luke is quite the talented artist and received a degree in Visual Communications from Oklahoma State University. After college, Luke decided to focus on his interests in business. The new graduate spent a little more than a decade learning the skills he would need to become a businessman, while continuing to grow as a skilled craftsman. Luke knew he wanted to help people on their journey of lifestyle change, while having full support to help them succeed; and he knew this desire would not come for him in his current 9 to 5 office job so he took the path less traveled and became a business owner. As fate would have it Luke met a man who owned multiple gym locations and was wanting to retire. Luke saw this opportunity as the chance he wanted to positively impact people’s lives and within a month was the new owner of a small gym franchise location called Access Fitness.
Unfortunately, Luke encountered some inadequate communication regarding the particular Access Fitness location he purchased and quickly found himself in the position of sinking or swimming, luckily Luke chose to swim. When Luke purchased the facility, he acquired all the gym’s equipment, with the facility and the few members the gym had, the rest was learning on the job for Luke. After acquiring the gym, the young entrepreneur began a tough journey of self-taught lessons. Without having guidance from business-minded figures in his early life, Luke had to develop many of his skills based on trial and error. After a few years of running Access Fitness, Luke knew he had to branch out and create his own gym brand, which we now know as The Hub Gym. Luke has often explained how he has learned by doing the wrong thing first, then learning how to do the right thing – maybe not the most cost effective way of learning but certainly impactful and beneficial for not making the same mistakes. Over time, there have been several other business partners and mentors involved with the gym that worked with Luke, helping to make The Hub Gym the best fitness center in Broken Arrow. However, Luke has always been a constant cornerstone of The Hub, the one who truly set the vision for what The Hub Gym is today.
Luke, together with his wife Lily Owens, desired to run a locally-owned facility that would be a center of health, fitness, and thriving, lasting community. They noted this type of fitness center was missing within the Broken Arrow community. Yes, there were other gyms, but none that did not mirror the typical large and impersonal gym franchises. In Luke’s mind, the future Hub Gym would be a place people could come and feel comfortable (and truly enjoy) working on their health with others. This type of facility was gaining ground in larger cities nationwide, which inspired him to bring a similar vision to Broken Arrow. The business owner desired a place where people simply felt good, looked forward to being, and gradually developed real, permanent lifestyle change. The building that now houses The Hub Gym was purchased by Luke Owens’ in laws, Jim and Pat Bomar, in 2009. The dilapidated building was originally a Humpty Dumpty grocery store in the 1950s and then a Farmer’s CO-OP before it set vacant for years in the early 2000s. After a complete restoration of the building, along with many prayers, hard work, and commitment, the vision finally breathed life, and the The Hub Gym opened in 2011. Luke and his wife finally began seeing the dream come to fruition.
Luke’s passion is to impact people’s lives. He is passionate about people, and fitness just happens to be the vein that he runs in to inspire and motivate people to be everything they desire. He simply wants to be an inspiration, and help people recognize their potential, and that all they have to do is take the first step. Anything they want, concerning a fitness goal, or lifestyle goal, is absolutely possible. And he wants to facilitate those first steps at the gym. Luke explains that when people come into the gym, they are seeking a change, and it always goes deeper than just wanting to lose weight. People are typically seeking a life change. “For me, fitness is simply an avenue, a good way to start, with facilitating change,” says Luke. But he recognizes the root issue is deeper than that, and that is where Luke thrives: helping people discover the potential they have within, and that they can be all they desire and feel called to be. Luke is passionate about helping people live their best lives, inside and outside the gym.
The Hub Gym has been described as the most “non-gym” in Broken Arrow. It’s been mentioned that stepping inside makes one feel they are in someplace between a combination of “an old flea market [and] a New York subway…[with] a modern twist that has every person feeling right at home”. Luke has said that over time, the vision for the gym has slightly changed. He desires to see the diverse and fulfilling community The Hub Gym has created expand into other communities, similar to franchising, but keeping the small and close community feel, which can easily be lost in “big-chain” gyms. The atmosphere, and the desire to positively impact people’s lives, will not change; the future locations will simply be an extension of the original Hub Gym, a place people truly enjoy, rather than dread, being.
Today, Luke Owens still uses his graphic design and artistic skills with freelance work; he is an artist at heart, and does the side work because he enjoys it. The Hub Gym receives regular business coaching from a company called Thrive, who runs highly successful coaching with many small businesses around the city. Luke continues to stand behind the vision of The Hub Gym to positively impact the lives of people, and is also proud to partner with recent co-owner Josiah Wiens to run a thriving and high-energy business full of loyal members that brag about The Hub Gym and create a beautiful community within the walls of The Hub Gym.
